A diabetic diet is a means of eating the healthiest foods and maintaining a consistent mealtimes. Often, patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes and diabetes need to meet with a registered dietitian to assist with creating meals and plans that are based upon the patient's specific health goals, meal preferences, and lifestyle. The registered dietitian can also guide the patient in making healthier eating habits and portion sizes based on lifestyle and activity levels.
A diabetic diet will be guided by healthy carbohydrates, fiber-rich foods, fish and “good” fats. Examples of healthy carbohydrates are fruits, vegetables, legumes, and low fat dairy products such as milk and cheese. Examples of fiber rich foods include vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes and whole grains. A diabetic diet should also have heart-healthy fish incorporated at least twice per week. Fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines.
