Most babies of mothers who require antidepressant medication during pregnancy and/or postpartum experience no ill effects. However, it is important to remember that not treating maternal depression has a harmful effect on pregnancy and development of the baby. Mothers who require medication to treat depression can often safely and successfully breastfeed.
Talk to your healthcare provider about medications that may be right for you. You can also visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to learn about drugs and their possible effects on a breastfed baby.
