Smoking cessation is a general term for coming off of tobacco use. The most common form of tobacco use is smoking cigarettes. Other forms of tobacco use are smoking pipes, cigars, or bidis, chewing tobacco, and inhaling fumes from electronic products like e-cigarettes, e-vaping, and hookahs.
A successful smoking cessation program involves a combination of the below steps:
- Setting a quit date
- Notifying your family and friends of your plan to quit
- Removing all nicotine products, i.e., tobacco, lighters, rolling paper, etc…
- Identifying your triggers
- Changing some of your habits which involve tobacco use
- One on one therapy
- Group therapy
- Over the counter medication like nicotine-containing gums, lozenges, and patches
- Prescription medications like nicotine-containing nasal sprays, inhalers, Chantix, and an antidepressant called Zyban
