We don't know what causes migraines (exception: menstrual migraines are postulated to be caused by a drop in serum estradiol levels), but some things are more common in people who have them:
- Most often, migraine affects people between the ages of 15 and 55 (cohort includes perimenopausal people who get migraines).
- Most people have a family history of migraine or of disabling headache.
- They are more common in females assigned at birth.
- Migraine often becomes less severe and less frequent with age.
