Both support groups and group therapy offer support to a small number of people. Both are focused on a specific topic, e.g., anxiety, depression, coping with Asian hate crimes. Both groups meet regularly, i.e., once a week, and have an ongoing schedule. Both Alpha’s group therapy and support groups are led by trained therapists.
Both support groups and group therapy provide safe places for you to explore your thoughts and feelings. Doing so with others in similar situations offers an experience that is rich and valuable and different from a one-on-one session with a therapist. Your participation in a support group and/or group therapy is an investment of your time, money, and a lot of emotional effort.
The therapist facilitating group therapy and support group sessions will offer guidance as the group works through the issues together.
The goal of group therapy is to help participants change their behaviors. The goal of support groups is to help participants cope. Group therapy tends to be more structured.
Currently, Alpha is offering:
- group therapy sessions to participants who are in California
- Support groups for participants who are in any of the states plus the District of Columbia where Alpha Medical is live
